Effort and discomfort
What happens when we realize something will take effort -
Do you shrink and decide to load up the next, best series on Netflix or Hulu to binge watch ?
If you have ever witnessed a toddler learning to walk, they get up, fall down and get up again.
My daughter learned to walk on the dingy sidewalks and parks of New York City. Her knees were always dirtied and bruised, but she never complained, cried or most of all gave up. She kept up her effort to reach that goal - walking! I never thought it would be any other way. I didn’t worry that she wouldn’t get there or that I should adjust and make it easier for her to walk. I just let her try and fail, try and fail. As adults, we seem to lose that motivation to keep on the task until completion. Is there some magical recipe we need to glean from babies and toddlers? so fixated on putting the ball in the hole of whatever game they have in front of them until they really get it. Babies don’t give up! And neither should you. Perhaps a tweak in motivation, or tweak in the goal to make it so necessary for us to do the “thing” that we will risk falling, bruising and getting dirty to make it happen!
Decide today for yourself, what is that thing that you can commit to and follow through? You may just surprise yourself and rather than give up and give your time to Netflix, you may actually enjoy the process.
