Cultiver son jardin secret: A Midlife Practice of Joy & Selfhood

There is a beautiful expression in French:

Cultiver son jardin secret.

Literally, it means “to cultivate one's secret garden.”

But the garden isn't necessarily a garden at all.

It is the part of your life that belongs particularly to you.

The interests you pursue because they delight you. The books you read because you're curious. The places you go simply because you love them. The music you play, the art you look at, the language you learn, the friendships you cultivate.

The things you do that don't need to become a business, a credential, a goal—or even something you're particularly good at.

Your secret garden is what you cultivate because it makes you feel more like yourself.

And I think this idea has something important to offer women in midlife.

Pumpkin Spice Makes Me Cry (Why am I still sad in a happy season and the difficulty of an Empty Nest)

That first pumpkin spice latte of the season hit differently this year.

Not the warm hug of nostalgia I expected, but a wave of grief I didn't see coming.

For 20+ years, fall meant everything: pumpkin patches with tiny hands in mine, costume negotiations, jack-o'-lantern carving sessions, trick-or-treating adventures. I was the curator of autumn magic.

Now? The quiet is deafening.

If you're an empty nester feeling this too, I see you. The grief is real. We're not just missing our kids – we're missing who we WERE during these seasons.

But here's what I'm learning: we get to write a new fall story. One that honors what was while embracing what's becoming.

The French Art of True Relaxation: What American Professional Women Need to Know

I just returned from France, where I watched my cousins begin their monthlong vacation with an ease that can feel almost foreign to American sensibilities. We've been conditioned to believe our worth lies in constant productivity—but what if we've got it backwards?

The French average 5+ weeks of paid vacation vs. our 2 weeks. But it's deeper than policy—it's a fundamental philosophy about human worth and well-being.

Research shows women who take regular vacations have better heart health, less depression, and stronger marriages. Those who take frequent time off also perform 8% better professionally.

The paradox: by doing less, we become more effective.

For midlife professional women juggling careers, families, and aging parents—what would a month of true rest do for our lives? How would we emerge renewed?
